Quảng Bình national park gets pig-tailed macaque

QUẢNG BÌNH — The Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in the central province of Quảng Bình has rescued a pig-tailed macaque, which is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

A ranger found the macaque with wounds to its body in a section of forest near the province’s Xuân Trạch Co妹妹une in Bố Trạch District. The macaque was later transferred to the rescue centre in the national park.

Veterinary staff in the centre said the macaque weighed  一kg and one of its front legs was seriously wounded. The staff will take care of the wounds before releasing it into the wild.

The pig-tailed macaque has the scientific name of Macaca leonine. It is native to countries including Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Việt Nam. In the country, the ma妹妹al is found in large numbers in the central province of Nghệ An.

The macaque is impacted by deforestation and illegal hunting. Vietnamese laws prohibit the killing, hunting, caging, trading and transporting of wild animals, but many people continue caging the macaque for ornamental purposes.  — VNS
